Captain | Blackfly Charters

Captain Richard Black is a fourth-generation South Florida light-tackle charter captain and competitive tournament guide based in Islamorada, Florida. Raised in the Upper Florida Keys, Black spent his youth navigating the shallow flats, backcountry mangroves, and deep offshore waters of South Florida. He pursued a professional career on the water early, obtaining his U.S. Coast Guard Captain’s License at age 17. While simultaneously running charter trips, he attended Florida Gulf Coast University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Marine Science.


Captain Black is the founder of BlackFly Charters, based out of Islamorada. His guiding services span the entire Florida Keys chain—from Key Largo down to Key West and into the Everglades National Park. He specializes in sight-fishing on light tackle and fly for the "Inshore Slam" species (tarpon, bonefish, permit, and redfish, snook), as well as nearshore reef and offshore pelagics.
